January 26, St Peters St Civic Plaza
Seated at long white tables under a canopy of umbrellas, onlookers sampled various sweet and savoury nibbles provided by Council as they listened to inspiring addresses by Mayor Robert Bria and Ambassador William (Bill) Denny. Both speakers acknowledged our difficult historical beginnings, but also felt that Australia today has become a melding of many different people from across the globe and we should celebrate what we have, what we are and what we are capable of becoming. Following this opening, 59 newcomers then affirmed their allegiance to our country and were officially and personally welcomed as Australian citizens.
Another important part of the event was the recognition of significant achievements by a group or individual.
Award Winners were:
- Ryan Sumner-Knowles (Young Citizen of the Year)
- Colin Abel (Citizen of the Year)
- Kensington Residents Association (Community Event of the Year)
To close proceedings, The Australian Girls Choir sang 3 songs ending with the National Anthem.
