Guest Speaker: Denise Schumann OAM
Cultural Heritage & Historical Consultant

TOPIC: “Changing place and a changing society in 19th century Norwood: the story of ratbags, radicals and reformers from CJ Dennis to German Jesuits and everyone in between.”

This talk will tell the story of how from its foundation in 1848 the township of Norwood was at the frontline of agitating for political and social reform and challenged the conservatism of existing British colonial politics. Who were the movers and shakers committed to representative and participatory politics, and the creation of a more egalitarian society and civil society? Was it just coincidence? Or was there something in the water that Norwood can claim that in its golden age it was home to radical lawyers, artists, writers, politicians, architects, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and religious radicals some known, some unknown. Join historian, Denise Schumann, in what will be an engaging presentation guaranteed to inspire and challenge your view of history.

2019 Australia Day Celebrations

January 26, St Peters St Civic Plaza

Seated at long white tables under a canopy of umbrellas, onlookers sampled various sweet and savoury nibbles provided by Council as they listened to inspiring addresses by Mayor Robert Bria and Ambassador William (Bill) Denny.  Both speakers acknowledged our difficult historical beginnings, but also felt that Australia today has become a melding of many different people from across the globe and we should celebrate what we have, what we are and what we are capable of becoming.  Following this opening, 59 newcomers then affirmed their allegiance to our country and were officially and personally welcomed as Australian citizens.

Another important part of the event was the recognition of significant achievements by a group or individual.

Award Winners were:

  • Ryan Sumner-Knowles (Young Citizen of the Year)
  • Colin Abel (Citizen of the Year)
  • Kensington Residents Association (Community Event of the Year)

To close proceedings, The Australian Girls Choir sang 3 songs ending with the National Anthem.

Art vs Footpaths

There will be a motion before Council on Monday 21/1/19 to use money designated for public artworks for some footpath repair work. Does this concern you? Please contact your local member if so. While nobody is against the proper maintenance of our roads and footpaths should we steal from previously approved funds to do this? This is not a question of whether the Council SHOULD dedicate some monies for public art but whether it is right to re-purpose these funds.

NOTICE OF MOTION
1. That the Council allocates funding of $200,000 to be spent in 2019-2020 on footpath maintenance in
addition to any amount allocated for this purpose as part of the 2019-2020 Budget.
2. That the additional funding of $200,000 be made available by the suspension of the Council’s annual
allocation to its Quadrennial Major Public Artwork Program reserve fund for the next four (4) financial
years (2019-2020 to 2022-2023 inclusive)).
3. That the Council’s Public Art Policy be amended in accordance with the Council’s decision.
